African grey parrot flies from Frankfurt to Chicago

This time it´s not a Zoo animal transport, because private persons also own a bird, some of them a large and exotic one.

The sweet African grey parrot with the scientific name Psittacus Erithacus and it´s nickname “Athos” flies by plane to his new home in the USA.

“Endangered species (CITES-listed) animals are always something special. And they are always a challenge” says Sandra Seigfried. We are very closely connected to the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt für Naturschutz) in Bonn because the Export CITES is one of the most important documents when it comes to an export of endangered species. The regulations of the authorities have to be strictly followed for the preparation of the transport and the transport itself.

Also, in case of air transport, the regulations of the International Ai Transport Association (IATA) for the transport of living animals have to be followed strictly.

Before the flight departure at Frankfurt the export CITES has to be cleared by customs. With this procedure the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation has the proof that the parrot legally left Germany.

On US side the whole procedure happens the other way around. There will be an Import CITES which has to be cleared by the local authorities after arrival.

The recommendation is to work with professional export and import animal forwarding agencies because these clearances are always a big challenge.

Fact is that private persons are not able to handle the customs declarations on export side.
